Benckiser, makers of household and personal care products, is set to
invest about 1.2 billion Naira to prevent deaths caused by Diarrhea in
Nigeria.
At a meeting with the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi
Osinbajo, the General Manager of the Consumer Goods Company, Mr Rahul
Murgai, said nearly 100,000 child mortality annually caused by diarrhea
in Nigeria was a trend they hope to change.
Mr Murgai pointed out that Nigeria loses over 400 billion Naira
annually as a result of poor health and hygiene, making their objective
of promoting the culture of good health and hygiene and project on
healthier lives and happier homes a must in Nigeria.
In 2008, statistics from the United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) put the mortality rate resulting from diarrhea at 150,000 annually. These, UNICEF said was caused by poor sanitation and hygiene.
With a global vision of healthier lives and happier homes, resulting to partnerships with the Save the Children non-governmental organisations and Nigeria’s Ministry of Health, Mr Murgai announced that his company would invest 2.1 billion Naira to fight diarrhea in Nigeria.
Already, a pilot project tagged “Stop Diarrhea Programme” initiated in Nigeria in partnership with Save the Children has commenced work in Shomolu Local Government Area of Lagos State to reduce the prevalence of diarrhea and help eradicate child deaths from this prevalent ailment.
Mr Murgai said the project, when completed, would be replicated across Nigeria
