In a season where Premier League spending has reached the £1bn mark for
the first time, we take a look back at some of the best deadline
day deals and transfers.
10. Mikel Arteta
The skillful Spanish midfielder signed for Everton in a £2m deal from
Real Sociedad in 2005. He quickly became a fan favourite on Merseyside
as he became an instrumental figure in a successful Everton season that
saw the Blues finish in 4th place, achieving entry to the qualification
stages of the Champions League.
Arteta went on to play for the Toffees for six and a half seasons before moving to Arsenal for a fee of £10m.

9. David Luiz
Known for his comedy hair cut and resemblance to Simpsons character
Sideshow Bob, David Luiz's unconventional style of defending sparked the
interest of Andre Villas-Boas in 2011. Chelsea went on to sign the
Brazilian from Benfica for €25m.
He became a hit with Chelsea fans but often left supporters scratching their heads as to why he didn't play in a more attacking position.
After scoring a free-kick and picking up a man of the match performance in an 8-0 demolition of Aston Villa, it seemed as though David Luiz was settling in well at Chelsea. However new manager Jose Mourinho decided against keeping the tricky defender, selling him to PSG for a hefty £50m.

8. Nemanja Matic
After leaving West London for sunny Benfica in 2011, Nemanja Matic rejoined Chelsea in January of 2014 for £21m.
The holding midfielder quickly became an ever-present force in Chelsea's midfield and imposed his aggressive nature to adjust to the Premier League's pace succinctly.
His Chelsea performances were topped off after being named in the PFA team of the year.

7. Juan Mata
After
struggling to secure a regular first team spot at Chelsea under Jose
Mourinho, Juan Mata was signed by Man Utd for a then club-record fee of
£37.1 m.
He has gone on to become one of Man Utd's biggest attacking threats in a team that has struggled to find the net this season. His lack of pace is made up by his on-ball wizardry and sublime skill.
All Man Utd need now is a striker to get on the end of Mata's build up play.

6. Andrey Arshavin
Another deadline day signing for Arsene Wenger saw him bring Russian winger Andrey Arshavin to the Emirates for £15m.
The Russian international's career started in blistering fashion as he scored all four of Arsenal's goals in a 4-4 draw with Liverpool. Unfortunately, despite glimmers of his best, his form didn't continue past the 2008/2009 season as Arshavin's time at Arsenal was disrupted by injury and poor fitness.

5. Ashley Cole
In
one of the most talked about transfers in the past decade, Ashley Cole
left North-London for his West-London neighbours Chelsea.
Ashley Cole claimed in his autobiography that he nearly "swerved off the road" when he heard Arsenal were only prepared to pay the left-back £55k per week. This tarnished his relationship with Arsenal supporters and saw him at the forefront of animosity for seasons to come.
For just £5m, the signing has to be considered one of the most shrewd of Jose Mourinho's Chelsea era.

4. Marouane Fellaini
Unapologetic Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini secured a move to
Manchester United on deadline day in 2013. Having been reunited with
former manager David Moyes, Fellaini went on to become a prominent
figure in an otherwise forgetful season for Man Utd.
The £27.5 m signing gave Man Utd much needed aggression and heading ability in midfield. However this wasn't enough to help the Red Devils qualify for the Champions League, as they failed to do so for the first time since the 1990/91 season.

3. Luis Suarez
The 2011 deadline day will be remembered for the day Kenny Dalglish spent an unbelievable £35m on Andy Carroll.
A few hours before the big number 9 signed, Dalglish acquired then 24-year old Luis Suarez from Ajax for £22.4 m. The rest is history as the Uruguayan set the Premier League alight before securing a big money move to Barcelona.
The same can't be said for Andy Carroll however.

2. Mesut Ozil
Arsene
Wenger broke tradition and splashed the cash on the 2013 deadline day.
Wenger paid Real Madrid a staggering £42.4m to bring German midfielder
Mesut Ozil to North London.
Ozil's made a slow start for Arsenal but has undoubtedly proved critics wrong this year with match saving performances week in, week out.
Ozil's creativity and control has seen him become one of Europe's hottest properties and currently leads the Premier League assists chart with 16 assists so far this season.

1. Carlos Tevez & Javier Mascherano
The Argentine duo signed for West Ham for an undisclosed fee in 2007 in one of the shadiest transfer deals in modern history.
Whether the pair signed from Corinthians, or agent Kia Joorabchian, one thing is certain. This signing was a catalyst for West Ham in their 'great escape season' which saw them reach safety after achieving 7 wins in their last 9 games.
